Chick’s Solo Shot Helps White Team Even Fall Series
The Nebraska baseball team continued its Red-White Series Tuesday afternoon, with a late home run propelling the White squad to a 1-0 win in seven innings at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. It evened the fall series at 1-1.
Cam Chick's solo roundtripper broke open the scoreless game in the top of the seventh. With one out, the senior sent the first pitch he saw over the left-center wall for the only tally of the day.
Ethan Bradford got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief work, allowing one hit. Braxton Bragg had the mound start for the White team, going 4.0 shutout innings with one hit, no walks and six strikeouts. Jaxon Jelkin also threw 1.2 innings of hitless relief with three Ks.
For the Red squad, Mason Ornelas threw 3.1 innings of shutout relief of starter Kyle Perry. Ornelas allowed two hits with no walks and struck out seven.
Matt Guthmiller had a multi-hit day for the White team, finishing 2-for-3. Max Anderson (1-for-3) and Jack Steil (1-for-2) each registered a hit for Red.
After drawing two walks in the top of the first inning, White was held off the bases until the top of the fourth. A pair of two-out singles from Guthmiller and Tyler Palmer put two aboard, but Ornelas issued his third strikeout of the inning -- and seventh of the day -- to get out of the jam.
With Chick’s homer putting White ahead 1-0, Red threatened in the bottom half of the seventh. Anderson led off with a double down the left field line, and after a Luke Jessen walk, Anderson advanced to third on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. But the White team ended the game on a 6-4-3 double play to escape with the series-tying win.
Nebraska concludes the Red-White Series on Wednesday, Oct. 13, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
